Rapper/actor ('ractor'?) Mos Def hits the UK for three gigs.

Mos Def has announced a return to the UK for a trio of tour dates.

The rapper hits these shores in support of current album ‘The Ecstatic’ and forthcoming single ‘History’ on April 19th. If that wasn’t enough, he’s also on two of the tracks on the new Gorillaz album ‘Plastic Beach’, out March 8th.

We doubt Gorillaz’ Murdoch and co will make an appearance at this tour, but it’s going to be ace anyway so get your tickets now.

Tickets for the rare live appearances are £25 in ‘the regions’ and a tiny bit more expensive in London, because everyone knows Londoners are rich and eat caviar for breakfast.

April
13 – Glasgow O2 Academy
14 – Bristol O2 Academy
15 – London Shepherds Bush Empire

Just what you've always wanted: a Darwinist electro-opera!

Swedish siblings The Knife have announced details of their upcoming new album.

They’re releasing a studio version of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, their opera inspired by Charles Darwin, on 1st March. The piece was originally conceived with theatrical production company Hotel Pro Forma.

“I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative,” said The Knife’s Olaf. “We’ve approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way.”

The CD release of the opera comprises two CDs, and features ‘Colouring of Pigeons’, which the band have put on their website as a free download. Click here to access it.

If you fancy catching the opera for real, it’s being performed in the following places this year:

Athens
8-9 January

Stockholm
29 January – 1 Feb

Munster
5 June

Taking time out of his busy schedule being the face of Swiftcover Insurance (yeah, we wish we didn’t have to type that as well), sinewy rock god Iggy Pop’s been confirmed for this summer’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival.

Grunge legends confirm: 90s are the new 80s.

Yes, it’s another reunion. We’re bored of them too, don’t worry. This time it’s grunge legends Soundgarden who’ve decided to end their 12 year hiatus and bag a load of cash in the process.

Croaky crooner Chris Cornell yesterday tweeted that “the 12 year break is over and school is back in session!”, confirming rumours that the band would be getting back together for a run of shows this year. We’ve been peering into our crystal ball and have our suspicions that their first gig might be the ‘remember the good old days?’ reunion slot at this year’s Coachella festival alongside Pavement, which takes place April 16-18 in California.

Of course, the news of a reunion comes as no suprise to anyone who heard Cornell’s objectively abysmal Timbaland-produced album ‘Scream’, which sold about 32 copies and was universally slated. Soundgarden’s reunion also opens up the potential for a slew of 90s-themed festival bills this year, now Rage Against The Machine have had a massive resurgence and Smashing Pumpkins are rumoured to be dusting off their capes once more.

Relive the terror of Chris Cornell’s solo career below. Be thankful he’s got that out of his system.

Sounds like a great idea to us. Oh no, hold on, we mean ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE.

Newnoise readers: have you ever fancied going to Africa? Experience the sheer beauty of the country, soak up the culture? What, you couldn’t afford it? How about you just pay for a part-time member of Animal Collective to go instead?

In an unfathomably stupid move, sometime Animal Collective member Josh Deakin has asked fans to donate $25,000 (yes, $25,000) to enable himself and a couple of friends to play at a music festival in Mali, and probably go on safari or something.

For $20 you’ll get a signed photo from the trip, $100 will get you a CD of edited sounds from the trip (translation: he’ll leave a dictaphone running) and $200 will get you an art book from the trip.

“All the costs of international travel, transportation to the desert site, book production costs, CD replication, packaging costs, shipping, layout designer costs, etc. are what make up the financial goal that we are striving for” says Deakin. As an aside, the average Mali worker’s annual salary is approximately $1,500 in US dollars.

If you’ve got a spare hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket, why not head over to Deakin’s Kickstarter page and contribute. Trust us, there’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of paying for someone else’s holiday during a recession!
